After a brief spell in a Reigate lawyer's office, ironically a working environment where John would have likely excelled given his dedication to writing, record keeping and good order, John served his national service in Malta in the Royal Army Medical Corps - even despite the fact that he couldn't stand the sight of blood! That said, it seemed that most of his time was spent in the office or on the tennis court!
